Pupendo
comedy

Pupendo is a child's game in which a prankster promises something mystical and pleasurable to his victim, then delivers a sharp slap on the stomach. Director Jan Hrebejk uses this somewhat cruel ruse as a metaphor for the unfulfilled promises of Communism.

"Mara is a highly talented sculptor who, through some ambiguous political misstep, has fallen from his former prestigious position at the Academy of Art. Now, he barely makes ends meet producing ceramic piggy banks. Mara lives with his astute, loving wife Alena and their two sons in a small apartment in Prague, rowing across the Vltava River every day to his ramshackle studio on Liben Island. Mara's former student at the Academy, the socially ambitious Magda, has made a much more practical marriage to high school principal Mila. This couple operates as deeply within the Communist system as Mara and Alena live outside it. Soon, circumstances reunite the former teacher and student, providing a forum for all manner of political blustering and shows of artistic temperament. They all profess to want to put art above politics, but their attempts to do so cause nothing but trouble."
