"Divided We Fall" is set in a small Czech town occupied by German forces during the last years of the Second World War.
Josef (Boleslav Polivka) and Marie Cizek (Anna Siskova) are a childless couple trying to lead a normal life in the face of Josef's sterility and the chaos of war that surrounds them.
One night, Josef has a chance meeting with David Weiner (Csonger Kassai), the young Jewish son of his former employer, whose family has long since been deported from their town. David is now the only surviving member of his family and has recently escaped from a concentration camp. After brief deliberation, Josef decides to give David refuge in their home.
To distract the attention of the German authorities and to protect their neighbors from possible reprisals, Josef takes a job with Horst Prochazka (Jaroslav Dusek), a Nazi collaborator and former colleague, and becomes more and more entangled with the representatives of arbitrary rule. To make matters worse, Horst has a romantic interest in Marie and often visits the couple unannounced - increasing the danger of David's discovery.
When Marie bluntly refuses Horst's advances, Horst plans revenge on the Cizeks by attempting to move a Nazi clerk into their house. In order to prevent this, Marie pretends that she is pregnant and they will soon need the room as a nursery. Terrified of being discovered, and desperate for a solution, Josef insists that David impregnate Marie.
Based on a true story, "Divided We Fall" intermingles decent people and traitors, heroism and collaboration, generosity and cowardice.
